Sony offers it on the console for a reason, and that reason is convenience. It’s a way for you to ensure that you never have to worry about the mic being on when you load into a game lobby. Of course, you’ll want to make sure and toggle the mic back on if you want to use the chat function through the controller’s mic later on. If you’re unsure how to set up the auto-mute for the DualSense controller mic, not to worry. This handy guide will walk you through the steps so you know for next time. It’s a rather simple process, too. Because it’s easy to enable and it won’t take long, this is something you can toggle on and off at your leisure.
How to auto-mute the mic on the PS5’s DualSense controller
First things first, I want to stress that enabling this feature makes the mic on the DualSense controller muted by default. Just in case it wasn’t clear before. This means it will be off anytime you hop into a game where voice chat is available and on by default. If you’re fully aware of that and still want to disable the mic automatically, view the steps below.
Go to the settings menu
After you power on the PS5, go to the settings menu on the console. You can find settings by locating the gear icon in the top right corner of the UI. It’ll be sitting between the search button and your profile’s avatar.
Click on the Sound menu
Next, click on the Sound menu which can be found under “Storage” in the list.
Select the Microphone option
Once inside the Sound menu, you’re going to want to select the Microphone option from the list. Inside this menu you’ll find all of the different settings that pertain to the microphone on the DualSense controller.
Highlight Microphone Status When Logged in
As you’ll see when you get to this part of the menu, the mic will be set to on by default. But, as noted before you can change this.
Change the toggle option to Mute
Once you click on the Microphone Status option, a toggle menu should pop up and give you the option to change the default setting. Select Mute. Then the console will save your change and now the mic on the controller is off by default. Now, it’ll be auto-muted anytime you enter a game with a live online chat lobby.
Mute the DualSense mic manually each time
If you don’t want to auto-mute your DualSense controller’s mic, you can opt to mute the mic manually every time. This is easy enough so long as you remember to do so. All you have to do to mute the mic manually on a case by case basis, is tap the small pill-shaped button that sits below the PlayStation button. This button is mainly for the mic, and a simple click will mute the microphone. Another click will unmute it. Easy as pie right? Now that you know how to auto-mute the DualSense mic, you can be assured that random people you play with aren’t going to hear you during gameplay.
