This device is interesting (if a little slow)
The Ikea Sjömärke’s beauty is its ability to turn an ordinary table into a futuristic wireless charging table. This sounds absurd, but the Swedish company has found a way. The Sjömärke looks like a large charging pad itself. You take it, and you attach it to the underside of the surface you want to convert. In order to attach it, you will have a few options. The first option is to screw it into place; the device appears to have designated holes to put screws in. If you want to do that, just know that the screws are not included with your order. The other option is double-sided tape, but you should make sure that it’s not too thick. When you have the Ikea Sjömärke in the desired position, you will be able to pump 5W of power into your device. That may seem extremely paltry compared to the more robust wireless charging options out there, but this is new territory that the company is hiking.
There’s a limit to where you can place the Ikea Sjömärke
As you can imagine, you can’t just place the device onto any old surface; there are some rules you’ll need to follow to get charging. Firstly, since you’re charging through solid material, it can’t be too thick. The Sjömärke’s optimal charging distance is .31-.87 inches (8-22mm). You also need to take into account the material that the surface is made up of. It’s recommended that you use the Sjömärke with wood or plastic. It might not work with glass, as it’s difficult to pass a current through glass. On the other side of that coin, it’s probably not the best idea to use this on a metal surface, as it could expose you to a current.
If you want to pick on up, it’s decently priced
The Ikea Sjömärke is really a unique device, and we don’t expect this one to be the last one. If you want to pick one up, you won’t have to wait long, as it will available for purchase sometime in October. It will set you back $39.99 when you buy one.
