HMD Global states that most Android users bought budget phones

In case you don’t know, HMD Global is the company that manufactures Nokia’s devices. The company was able to present us with some stats about the Android market. In Q1 of 2022, roughly 60% of Android users chose to rock budget phones. Looking at Android users in the US, about two-thirds use phones that are under $250. It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that most of these are cheaper Motorola and Samsung phones. The numbers might actually be higher if you factor in phones between $250 and $300. That price range could be considered in the budget range as well. Once we venture past that point, we start to get into the mid-range territory. The stats also state that about 85% of carrier sales in 2021 consisted of sub-$300 prepaid phones. This means that most people don’t want to pay for more expensive phones or get them on contracts.

This makes sense

As tech enthusiasts, it’s easy to forget about the market of people who use their phones as a basic tool. They’re not really looking for a phone with a beautiful screen, amazing speakers, or the most powerful processor. They’re looking for a phone to get them through the day. Buying a $249 Nokia phone seems to be much more compelling option to buying a $1,000 iPhone if you’re not going to use it for anything demanding.
