The Pixel 6 may combine face and fingerprint scanning

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is rolling out this feature via a future update. How exactly would this work? Well, the phone would scan your face, and when it’s partially recognized, the phone would lower the requirements needed for a fingerprint match… by a lot. That would make unlocking your phone a breeze, and would essentially fix everything that is working with Pixel 6’s fingerprint scanners. Just to be clear, Android 13 did improve them a lot as it is. This way, Google does not need any additional hardware, nor would this impact battery life a whole lot. Google opted not to include facial scanning thus far due to the battery hit, even though it has been in testing for quite some time. This would work on the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a. If Google reaches a point in which it’s happy with its testing, this feature may see its way to all three of those smartphones.

The Pixel 7 series could offer DPAF facial scanning

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro handsets, on the other hand, may actually include a proper facial scanning feature. The two phones would utilize their front-facing camera. They’re said to use DPAF (dual-pixel auto-focus). DPAF method was long rumored for the Pixel 6 Pro, as the Pixel 6 does not support it. Google didn’t seem to be able to get it to work, as the battery hit was too big. The Pixel 7 series may deliver it, though. This does not confirm anything, though, of course. Google may yet skip facial scanning on the Pixel 7 devices as well, we’ll just have to wait and see. As a reminder, the two phones are expected to launch in early October.
