On the surface, neither of these foldables have big differences from their predecessors. A lot of their changes are internally, aside from the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s Cover Display which is now 4x bigger. And quite noticeable actually.  The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is now $999, while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is $1799. Both of which are $200 cheaper than the previous models. Pre-orders open today, and they ship starting on August 27.

Galaxy Z Flip 3

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes in seven different colors. But only four will be available everywhere. Those four are Cream, Black, Green and Lavender. But on Samsung.com you’ll be able to get it in White, Pink and Gray.  As mentioned already, the Cover Display is now four-times larger than the Galaxy Z Flip was. This is going to allow you to read four lines of text, and even scroll through notifications. As well as being able to use Quick Settings, Samsung Pay and even add Widgets to the display. Making it a whole lot more useful.  The internal display still sports a 6.7-inch 120Hz Adaptive Refresh Rate display. So the phone is roughly the same size as the original. Samsung did shave off a few mm’s all around the Flip 3 though. That screen is also about 30% stronger than the original Galaxy Z Flip. While the front display uses Gorilla Glass Victus.  More or less the same cameras from the original Galaxy Z Flip. With two 12-megapixel cameras on the back for ultra-wide and wide-angle shots. And a 10-megapixel internal camera for those selfies. Samsung has also added a few features to the camera, including Quick Shot and Dual Preview.  For $999, you’re getting a lot of phone here from Samsung. And quite impressive that the price is as low as it is.

Galaxy Z Fold 3

As is the case with just about every phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is “thinner and lighter” than the previous model. That’s especially important for a phone as large as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was. It sports the same 7.6-inch main display. With a 6.7-inch Cover Display. Both of which are now 120Hz Adaptive Refresh Rate displays. Which is rather impressive.  The Galaxy Z Fold 3 comes in about 11 grams lighter than its predecessor. So it’s not a lot lighter, but there is a difference there. Though, that could also be due to the smaller battery. As the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a 4400mAh capacity battery versus the Galaxy Z Fold 2 having a 4500mAh.  Samsung is calling the Galaxy Z Fold 3 the “most immersive display ever”. And that is because Samsung snuck in a camera in that display, but you won’t be able to see it. It’s an under-display camera, and the first for a Samsung smartphone. A few other smartphone makers have done this, but Samsung is the first to do it in a somewhat mainstream phone.  You will still be able to see that under-display camera when it is not in use, as the pixels are a tiny bit darker. But to the untrained eye, it won’t be noticeable.  With the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the S Pen arrives as well. And there are two S Pen models this year. The S Pen Pro and S Pen Fold Edition. The main difference here is that the S Pen Pro is Bluetooth while the Fold Edition is not. The S Pen Pro is also a bit longer, and obviously needs to be charged. And you’ll need a case to be able to do that, unfortunately. To make the S Pen work on the Fold 3, Samsung made both models have an Auto-retractable tip, so it can protect the display. Since the display is still soft, but nowhere near as soft as the original Galaxy Fold was.  Samsung will sell the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in three colors: Phantom Green, Phantom Black and Phantom Silver. Pre-orders open up on August 11 for $1799. And they will start shipping on August 27.
